Blog assignment #2. 2nd Question. "If"

2. Kipling uses the terms man and son at the end of the poem. Why did Kipling choose to use these words? Does the term "man" apply to all humans or is Kipling implying that courage and leadership are masculine traits? Were the terms used to make the message personal or should we consider that Kipling's message accurately defines the requirements of any courageous person or leader?

I think Kipling used the word man and son because he's saying that to his son, that one day when he grows, he'll turn into a man and that he's teaching him a way of life and to respect it. The term man is exactly what it means. He'll turn into one, because now days, most male adults act like they are men, but really acting childish. Kipling wants his son to be a man, a real man and to act like one. Implying courage and leadership to his son. I think that Kipling was meaning to say that to his son and to us. To be good in life, because life is short. Be mature about it and do think wisely.

1. Do you agree with Kipling's message in this poem? Why or why not? Identify which of Kipling's statements is the most meaningful to you and explain why. Is Kipling's advice useful for people today? Why or why not?

Yes, I agree, because its a way of life that can be used by everyone and everydays living. The most meaningful statement that he wrote in the poem was when he said "If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss". It meant that when you realize there is more to life than wealth and would be willing to sacrafice it all just to be happy. I agree and that part of the poem meant alot to me beacause really in life if you could be the richest man/woman on earth yet you most likely won't be happy 100%. Money, popularity, material that is valuable, things that are valuable won't mean a thing in the end. It can't make you happy, you could be the only person on this world and have everything, yet, you won't be happy. I think Kipling's advice is useful for everyone today because today theres greedy people all over the world and probably never got a chance to be happy or learn to give happiness. So i think if Kipling got a chance to to tell the world what he wrote in his poem, I really think that he would open up alot of peoples eyes and help them realize it's not what you want, it's what you need.

I think that it's actually kind of hard trying to figure out the real hero in the story because Mrs. Brown is a hero and Christy is also as well. Mrs. Brown is a hero because she never gave up on her son. She treated Christy like the other children, her children. Mrs. Brown is a hero for helping others as well, just not Christy. Others with disabilities and people who think children with disabilities are just people who have to go to an instution. Mrs. brown has helped people think that anyone with disabilities can have a way of understanding if you just give them a chance in loving them for who they are. Mrs. Brown also stuck to her word and ended up successfully achieving her goals for Christy. Mrs. Brown has and always will have faith for Christy. That was makes her a real hero. Christy is a hero as well because he gives others like him the courage to just try. Christy may have been a hero to the adults who under estimated Christy. People saying he should go to an institution and because he will never be normal. Christy has proved them wrong. He did it!
So I think that there is actually two hero's in the story. Christy and Mrs. Brown.
